[mdlug] Entire computer stopped working

I had some trouble a couple days ago encoding a DVD for my Palm Pilot. The machine
locked up hard (so hard the reset button didn't work, and I had to cut the power from
the power supply) a couple of times.

The next night, it worked for one chapter, then I set it to work on another chapter
and went to bed. The next morning, the screen was totally locked and I had to ssh in
over Bluetooth from my Palm and shutdown the machine from there. Then, it failed to
boot up again, locking up after the drives were identified.

I think I now know why it didn't work. Last night when I tried to boot it, I noticed
that the BIOS was reporting only 1 CPU, though there are two there - Athlon MPs. I have
to presume one of the CPUs failed, and I'll have to yank it and hope the other CPU is
operational and I can boot the machine.

Prices for the 2GHz Athlon MPs are over a hundred bucks. I rather doubt I'll be picking
one up any time soon.

 Oy.

 Sincerely,

 Ray Ingles (313) 227-2317
