It's not that Linux has *bad* sound APIs. Linux just has *too many*
sound APIs that don't always play well together. At the very least,
you've got ALSA, PulseAudio, and JACK. Lots of apps that have been
around a while use older APIs, like OSS or ESD or aRTs or...

This will settle down eventually, but I think we've got a couple more
years of pain to get through.
