Good soundcards that are easy to install include Creative Labs'

-- they are well-supported under Linux -- you can find good ones used
for as little as $5-10. They have an advantage over other cheap sound
cards in that they actually have sound processing chips -- most cheap
cards and on-board sound processors use AC '97 codecs that use too
much CPU processing power. While that's less of an issue now than it
used to be, I still HATE to use CPU cycles for things that are best
off-loaded to dedicated chips...
