1. In the College I work at and some others There are say 15,000 students that we have to report on. and sometimes it takes many hours to run jobs against. The only to do that is to parallelize the processes.
2. There is a lot of modeling in research where there are a lot of number crunching. (see top500.org)
On the site you will find that about 75% of the fastest computers on earth run Linux. Mostly Suse Enterprise Server.
I'm just starting. I have done the threaded communications base c++ classes for the grid. The next thing I'm looking at is the applications that need number crunching.
If I have the rules I can put it in symbolic/equation form.
