Friends of mine & I have used it recently and in the past. The closest
relation to it in the Linux world is the L4 project. That's where IBM,
and later, an Aussie telecom group rewrote parts of Linux to run on
top of an assembly language / C++ kernel.
The Assembly language was used for processor init, and the microkernel
was written in C++. Linux L4 and QNX work essentially the same. The
programmer's interface looks and acts like UNIX. The added feature
with the microkernal design is that everything, even the drivers, are
actual user space programs. In the L4 case, the L4 flavored distro
runs ~20% faster than the non-L4 version. Since QNX is designed from
the ground up with this architecture in mind, I expect that it would
run a good bit faster than the L4 install.
