I've done this a lot. I just run an audio cable from my cassette player
to the Line In jack on my sound card, set the Record device in the sound
mixer (I use amixer for ALSA) to Line In, then I use Audacity to do the
recording. It works pretty well. You'll probably have to experiment with
the Record Volume in your mixer to get the level that gives you the best
sound.
