Actually, *Livermore* National *Laboratory did a study on this issue
in an attempt to put to rest the issue of the energy budget of
ethanol. Their findings, while mixed, did point out that with today's
technologies already in production, ethanol from corn can produce a
net positive balance of energy. This positive balance is only achieved
when the spent mash is fed back to cows as feed, or is used in a
co-generation plant to heat the wort. In Arron's defense, the study
did mention that of all the ethanol feed stocks under consideration,
corn produced the smallest net positive balance.*
