I've had good experience with:

   MAG Innovations 17"
   Model No:      780
   Product No: LT765s
   Resolution: 1280x960 24 60Hz

   + Sharpness - flightgear with clouds and textures turned on,
		 looks as clear as seen through the plastic canopy
   + Ruggedness - I've packed, moved, and unpacked a half dozen times with
                  no noticeable effect.

A monitor is generally unaffected by the OS.  The graphics card however
is affected.
