Thanks.  I don't see anything in that knowledge base,  but I'll look more
carefully.

I tried the cable with a system that can boot Windows ME.  The "APC
PowerChute" sotware installed fine when the UPS was connected,  and is able
to talk to the UPS.  I tried unplugging and re-plugging the cable while both
the UPS and the computer were on;  the PowerChute software noticed the
disconnection, and reconnected just fine afterwards.

Here's some console output from the server, after plugging the UPS back in
to it:
