[mdlug] APC UPS advice

I got a new toy today: an APC "Back-UPS XS 900" UPS (model BX900R). I
plugged it in for the initial battery-charge an hour or two ago... only 18
hours left.

It came with a USB interface cable (usb on one end, RJ-45 on the other; the
RJ-45 jack fits into the UPS). I tried plugging it into the server I'll be
running off it and installing the Debian "nut" and "nut-usb" packages.
However, "lsusb" doesn't show any new devices, even after "modprobe usbhid"
and "modprobe usb-serial". (I know the USB card is working because I have a
thumb drive plugged into it; I'm using part of said thumb drive as a swap
partition.)

Kernel 2.6.14.5.

Is there some setting I need to tweak to get this cable to work? Should I
just give up and try a serial cable instead? Does the cable not work until
the UPS is fully charged?
