They're not supposed to be, but sometimes they are. One
computer I saw has a SATA controller that only works with
hard drives and not with cdroms or dvds. Usually when
SATA stuff doesn't work as expected it will turn out to
be either weird hardware or the need for a special driver
or a newer kernel.
