...and sometimes it can be a critical problem.  

I have a friend (a crazy russian mountain climber/bit-head) who
insists on owning the best possible knife, because once he found
himself in the wilderness with a failed knife and a life-threatening
reason that he needed one.

He has *nice* knives.  

Flashlights especially fall into this category - odds are good when you
want your flashlight you'll be pretty sad if it doesn't work.
