There is a company called "Network Appliance"; I seem to remember that the
MSU Computer Science department uses one of their products as a fileserver
for all the research groups. Their flagship product has been around for 12
years or more. It talks SMB, NFS and NCP, and has a custom Unix-like
filesystem on top of RAID and battery backup. They were one of the early NAS
vendors, before you could buy NAS-in-a-brick. I've never personally owned
one :) .
