There is a company called "Network Appliance";  I seem to remember that the 
MSU Computer Science department uses one of their products as a fileserver 
for all the research groups.  Their flagship product has been around for 12 
years or more.  It talks SMB, NFS and NCP,  and has a custom Unix-like 
filesystem on top of RAID and battery backup.  They were one of the early NAS 
vendors,  before you could buy NAS-in-a-brick.  I've never personally owned 
one :)  .
