This may be obvious, but...

Be careful running kde or gnome apps on a desktop like xfce.  Testing 
has shown that you may actually be better off using the desktop of your 
applications, since you will be pulling in tons of libs anyway.  You 
can actually use more memory with Xfce + konsole + konqueror + amarok 
for example, than kde + konsole + konqueror +amarok.

Whatever you think about the numbers, the concepts seem solid.
