My favorite quote about this:
"Trying to make bits uncopyable is like trying to make water not wet.
The sooner people accept this, and build business models that take
this into account, the sooner people will start making money again."

There are several ways to get HD content these days. For free, you can get
stuff OTA ("over the air", broadcast); most prime-time shows on the big
networks are HD now, if you have an ATSC tuner. We picked up our HDTV about
two years ago; these days, by law every TV over 27" must have an ATSC tuner
built in. I got an HD tuner for xmas (Samsung DTB-H260F) and we've been
pretty pleased with it, but a new TV shouldn't need such an item.
If the TV has a QAM tuner (the format used for digital TV on cable networks)
you can get the unencrypted channels. On Bright House, that's the local
broadcast channels, even if you only get the bare minimum cable service. They
come through in HD. You can also get the digital music channels and (when
there's an actual game, Fox Sports Network). Other cable companies have even
more.
If you want to pay money (which you said you don't) you can get an HD cable
box or sattelite service. I'm cheap like you, though, I don't have experience
in that area.
Now, from what I gather, an ATSC/QAM capable HD tuner card for a PC is
pretty cheap these days, ~$70 I think. I don't have experience with setting
up a media PC but the software's out there.
