If your system's real-time clock starts gaining or losing time, when 
previously it was reasonably accurate, that's an early sign.  The 
ultimate symptom, of course, is when you start getting "CMOS errors" or 
BIOS setting mismatch"  errors at start-up.  Fortunately, you can now 
get most coin cells-- including the very common CR2025) at many dollar 
stores, five or six for a dollar.
