   Wanted to chime in with those who recommended Debian Stable for
that ; I've been using it for years, on both local & remote servers.
My main public server at home (apache/postfix/mysql) started on Debian
v2 (potato) & has been updated in place to the current stable version
(v3.1) since. When the next version (v4.0, "etch") goes stable,
I'll update it again. (change the sources list to point to etch
instead of sarge, then "aptitude update && aptitude -f dist-upgrade")
The remote server I'll likely just leave at the current version;
it's working fine, & I plan to set up a co-located server this year to
replace the remote server in any case...

     As others have noted, that can be done; I have it (auto-apt)
configued to automatically update the package lists but only
automatically run updates for installed packages... Results can be
emailed where you like...

      How do you mean "install new commands" ?

      The remote server (postfix & bind) I currently have, I can only
reach vis ssh or via the webmin interface installed on it...
