KMid/Rosegarden are trying to open a real, honest-to-goodness MIDI
sequencer. You almost certainly do not have one. Very few sound cards
today do direct MIDI support. The ISA SoundBlasters may have been the
last ones to do so, for all I know.
Timidity emulates a MIDI sequencer in software. (BTW, you probably
should look up the "EAW Patches" ('eawpats' is a good search term as I
recall) that make Timidity sound a lot better.) On Windows, the sound
card drivers often do that.
On Linux, you can run Timidity as you have been. Or, you can set up
ALSA to use either Timidity or Fluidsynth as a MIDI 'back-end'. (If
you use Fluidsynth, I recommend the "Music Theory" ('mustheory2.sf2')
SoundFont, it's like the "EAW Patches" of Fluidsynth.)
The final option is to find a real MIDI synthesizer, like a keyboard
from a music store, and get the right cables to hook up to your sound
card. From what you've described, that's probably overkill. :->
