Why not?  Are you sure that it doesn't work?  It works for me just as
you state it, although for efficiency I usually add the '-x' and '-T'
arguments to ssh.  Perhaps your environment is different from mine. 
What makes you think that it isn't working?  Do you have any diagnostic
messages, or it just silently fails?  For troubleshooting, can you give
the contents of your local script file, or if it's proprietary, at least
the gist of it?
