No worries, mine's from 1996 I think. My wife (then, my girlfriend) bought
me a nice stereo for my birthday, and we're still using it. It's got a
Dolby decoder (analog) so it's our home theater sound system now. I said I
wasn't an audiophile. :->

Well, I *did* point you to abcde, which can use FLAC
(http://flac.sourceforge.net/), an open-source lossless audio codec with
broad support. It compresses sound by 30-50%, as I understand, with no data
loss. Think of it as gzip optimized for sound. Another interesting lossless
codec is wavpack:

I like the idea he's come up with there of a small lossy file of reasonable
quality, plus a large 'corrections' file that, when combined with the lossy
file, results in full lossless recovery. That makes a good deal of sense. Use
the lossy one when space is at a premium, and archive both files for
safekeeping.
