If every shell script on a standard installation ended in .sh or .ksh,
half of /usr/bin would have those silly extensions.
If you need to know if a file is a script or binary ...
file filename
To see my point:
file /usr/bin/* | grep script.
unnecessary filename extensions are nothing more than a pain in rear....
