"Better" depends almost entirely on what you are doing. Are you compiling? Serving
files? Doing numerical computation? Surfing the web? Playing video? Some kernel
changes will make one of those better and reduce performance in another area. That's
one reason why there's no 'concrete' advice on what tests to run.
If you're worried about disk I/O, try bonnie. A kernel compile can itself be a
good stress test. Beyond that... I dunno. What do you care about?
