It's a fine, reasonably fast CPU and plenty for any "everyday desktop
use" I can think of; it won't be super fast with video or photo
editing but it won't be bad, either (and memory is really the
constraint there).

It is quite power-hungry, even when idle; a similarly priced AMD
chip might be a better financial bet depending on expected usage
patterns (extra electricity and summer a/c costs).  

Your cheapo kit almost certainly includes a low-efficiency power
supply; consider recommending an upgrade for similar reasons.


The $200 wal-mart linux PC sounds awfully attractive too.  It isn't
nearly as full-featured as whatever you're reviewing, but it uses
a trivial amount of power and is apparently super-quiet.  I bet
your barebones sounds like a jet engine.
