[mdlug] Linksys WRT-54G (Version 5) Router problems

I am having problems with this router. It suddenly started dropping wireless connections once in a while. I found that the firmware is the original one (01.00.00). The latest version of the firmware that is available is 01.02.02. I am a little apprehensive about updating the firmware as there is no way to back up the older version . Does anyone have an experience updating the firmware on this router?
