Last night installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS on the T30 Thinkpad in question.
Lots of directions and help on the Ubuntu site and forum. While still
very labor intensive most everything worked out of the box or after
some simple modifications documented at Ubuntu. What I have left is
checking the scanner for a MF Epson and the IR port. That means
wired/wireless, both kinds of suspend, printer, hardware detection, etc
just worked! Wow, I'm impressed. I've got two users and an admin account
with all the multimedia bells and whistles, wireless tools, additional
programs set up. The one user; a young girl; even said I didn't know you
could do that with windows! I just smiled and said it's better than
windows. I'm especially impressed with two things, the amount of concise
centrally located readily available support and the 'Alien' rpm
converter.

Regards
