Because you've posted to the MDLUG mailing list, one might assume that
your colleague is using a Linux system.
Regardless of OS, you may want to check to see if they have a proxy
server configured in their browser. If they do, you might have them
record what proxy server is configured and change the configuration to
no longer use a proxy server. This is necessary to identify whether the
proxy server is to blame or DNS is the problem. Some ISPs (or
corporations, if this is a company laptop) will require that you use
their proxy servers. If the ISP requires it, you won't even get that
first page. If you do get a site to come up, then try another.
If this is a windows system, occasionally some spy ware programs act as
a proxy server, redirecting the browser to localhost (127.0.0.1). These
programs normally assume that the system has a direct connection in the
internet, so that they can serve you pages. If a windows system is
directed at localhost, its time for the normal round of elimination
tactics.
