For most practical purposes, it's not a major concern. Basically, since the
closed-source stuff linked into the kernel can potentially muck with anything
in the kernel, there's no way to know if a particular kernel crash was
caused by an actual bug in Linux or in the proprietary code. So getting support
for a crashed kernel from the main developers will be difficult.
I personally want open-source whenever possible, but it's very hard to find
that in the wifi and video hardware areas right now. :-/ At the moment, they
are something of a necessary evil, but I keep my eyes open for more open
alternatives. I'll use them when available.
