[mdlug] Smartctl Reports Errors on HDD

Hi Everyone,
So I have my garbage machine with a new DVD drive in it and ran
Smartctl from the Parted Magic boot disc. Smartctl consistently reports
errors at the same point, and general health as passed. Which would be
confirmed by the original OS failing to boot and blue screening at the
same point each time? At any rate, I think I understand I need to write
to the corrupted sector to force the hard drive to permanently not use
that sector. I have the smartctl output, and the bad block howto from
their website. Zeroing the drive using dd seems to accomplish the same
thing, I'm assuming here at the expense of time.
Time I do have, I can set the machine to running with dd and go do
other things. And yes I know drives are cheap. I don't really want to
spend anymore than absolutely necessary. I've allready replaced the DVD
burner, and toyed with the idea of adding to the 1gb of ram.
