For a better Kubuntu, try SimplyMEPIS 6.0.
It is based on Ubuntu (and thus Debian).
And it is a Live Linux CD, thus you can try it out before installing it.
I've played with Red Hat, Slackware, SuSE, and Mandrake on the desktop.
For me, SimplyMEPIS 6.0 has proven to be the best KDE desktop distro yet.
I have installed it on my home desktop/tower PC and on my Sony Vaio laptop.
