with Ubuntu Version 6.1<BR></FONT><BR></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I attended the Oct and Nov 2006 meetings and got
information on getting up and running with Ubuntu. Mary T gave me a serial
modem (US Robotics Sportmodem with X2) that I hooked up with Ubuntu Version
6.06. I had a number of problems in getting it to work. Initially it
would dial as soon as I opened Ubuntu. Since there were a large number of
updates available for this version I downloaded them. After the
download the modem would hang up as soon as it made contact with my
ISP. I then got a copy of Ubuntu 5.1 and everything works OK.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Since Version 6.1 is now available I downloaded a
copy. Everything is OK except that a I cannot talk to the modem. The
drop down dialog box has the Activate line grayed out. I can set
properties OK but cannot contact the modem. I posted my problem on the
Ubuntu forum but have not got any responses.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>So right now I am back to Version 5.1, which is OK
but why is there a problem with 6.1?</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>If anyone has an idea of what might be done to get
the Modem Monitor to work I would be interested in getting the
information.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>The copy of 6.1 I am using was downloaded to a CD
from the WSU site. Since it didn't work I went to another PC at another
location burned another CD. It behaves the same way so it doesn't seem to
be me or my equipment resulting in a bad CD.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>For general information I am using a Dell 4400
desktop and have Windows XP Home installed on the primary HD (30 gb) and am dual
booting Ubuntu on the slave HD (60 gb).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>If there is a possibility that someone could look
at my installation I could bring the cpu to the meeting on Jan 13. If that
was possible what else would I need to bring (i.e. monitor, mouse, keyboard
etc.)? Or should I give up and be happy with Version 5.1?</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Thanks,</FONT></DIV>
