I have continued to beat on the problem of getting Version 6.1 to
function with an external serial modem using the Modem Monitor
installation procedure. It just does not work. As I noted in my
January posting the Activate option is not available. In addition it is
not possible to set the command to tone dialing. It always reverts back
to pulse dialing. There has been others who have encountered identical
difficulties. It took a while but some postings have been made on the
Ubuntu Forum noting these difficulties with the intention to report it a
Bug. I do not know if there is any thing in progress to correct the
matter. I was able to get my modem to work using an alternative
procedure given in a website that Ray Ingles identified for me. There
were three choices. Two were using the graphical interface and I
couldn't get them to work, probably due to the basic problem. The third
goes into terminal mode and works; using the pppconfig procedure. It is
sort of clunky compared to the point and click way but it works fine and
I am up and running. At this time I suggest that if someone is
interested in installing Ubuntu 6.1, and intends to use a serial modem,
that they be alerted to the fact that they not be able to get connected
to the internet unless they are willing to use pppconfig.
Thanks for giving me the information I needed to get operational.
