Many presidential campaigns have viewed the nation as a vehicle (wagon, ship,
...) carrying the people to the future.

Using a "team of race cars" analogy ...

Anarchy - cars with passengers, but no drivers
Communism - one car has driver, passengers hold hands to tie cars together
Working Capitalism - cars communicating driver/navigator/fueler/...
Corrupt managers/officials - passengers who throw other passengers overboard
Robber Barons - drivers who thank managers for extra speed but fail to notice
       the passengers thrown overboard
free trade agreements - "we'll change your tires, if you refuel us"
NAFTA - warrantied Pirelli tires,
        gasoline from tanks unchecked for leakage/water/dirt/oil/...
