Unfortunately unable to enforce such disclosure by less honest persons
than yourself, MCL 257.233a specifically requires a warranty
(i.e. binding statement with penalties) that the actual odometer
reading is accurate.
I don't know the paperwork involved, but several years ago had to
go through it when a part of the mechanical linkage had to be
disconnected and reconnected incidental to other wheel repairs.
Though the odometer was accurate before, and after, Baker Auto Care
(tel:+1.248.338.6890 with my positive recommendation) had to
file a form (they and I signed) with the state at a cost of $15(?).
"Knocking the clock" has been a profitable crime and such laws have
substantially mititigated the loss to consumers in the last two
decades.
