There might be a point to that.  We are already seeing that DRM laden
files are shunned for those that are not.  DRM laden hardware should go
the same way,

I to would prefer to build a file server from unencumbered hardware.  I
have yet to encounter a need for such a server.

The point is this hardware doesn't care about copyright.  It restricts
by file type.  I could create a free for the taking mp3, and it will not
let you share it.

I see a lawsuit in the future.  It would not be that difficult to set up
a collection of totally free files of the "forbidden" types, then sue WD
for having crippled hardware that doesn't allow you to share the free to
share files as you wish.
