Holy Hanna in a Handbasket, I can post again!!!!!!
OK, reports.
Wireless internet in the rooms, free
Nothing back yet on the party notification.
I will have business cards at the meeting.
What little advice I have been getting as consumables I will forward to
the list for digestion.
> It's been a while since I bought for one but a few obvious tips:
>
> The better the pop/booze/food, the more people will consume.
>
> The amount consumed is directly correlated to how popular your
> party is. This is probably the biggest factor. If you have
> two girls making out in the middle of the room, a LOT more
> stuff is going to get consumed (been there - saw that). Other
> than your memebers, walk-bys are going to peer in from the hall
> and decide if they are going to come in. What's the attraction?
> Lots of people is one way but props work too.
>
> Buy pop, beer & snacks that you do not mind consuming yourselves
> so the remainders do not go to waste.
>
> Costo is your friend :-) If you are running both nights, you
> need to know where the closest Costo and Meijer are located so
> that you can restock on Saturday (or Friday night if you REALLY
> blew it :-)
>
> Chips are easy but boring. Chocolate, in all it's forms, goes
> pretty well. Veggies need dip, which needs to be kept cool
> till it's served. Simple logistics but still.
>
> You do not HAVE to put everything out at once. You can plan
> to drop new stuff once an hour or so and do variety that way.
>
> You might want to assign people to "work" times so that everyone
> gets to wander the rest of the con/parties.
>
> Bring containers for snacks. GFS is a good place to browse if
> you need em. If you serve spreadables, you need plastic knives.
> If you serve stuff that's messy, small plates & napkins. Provide
> a trash and a returnables container. Remember that the room has
> minimal facilities and bring EVERYTHING you need. I think we have
> 3 or 4 large totes worth of stuff that we haul to every room party.
>
> Bring signs & tape to tape up announcing the room, time and theme.
>
> If you have glass beer bottles, tie a bottle opener somewhere
> in the bathroom and place the empty cardboard holders somewhere
> OBVIOUS so people can return empties.
>
> Hide your Saturday stock. You can push it into the closet and
> drop a cover over it.
>
> The two-bite brownies go over well. As do M&Ms. Unusual is
> cool. Wierd is not. Your budget pretty much dictates how far
> out you can go. Go browse Costco and think about what would
> work well. Trader Joes is good for slightly-exotics if your
> budget supports it. If things come in a container that's OK to
> serve with a label, leave em in there. People like knowing what
> they are getting. Chips should be out of the bag though.
>
> A super exotic can work well. Something that sets you apart
> from every other room party will filter by word of mouth. Careful
> here - it can run to a lot of work.
>
> Ice is ALWAYS an issue. Line the tub with plastic up to the
> high drain point so that the nice cold water stays in there,
> reducing your ice requirements. Bring your own ice or arrange
> with the hotel to provide it. Consider taping the toilet shut
> (masking tape) and writing "Do Not Use" on the tape.
>
> Remember that the consuite can always be a fallback for people
> so you may want to go heavier into exotics.
>
> ISTR that we burned about 6 cases of pop and same of beer for a
> mostly quiet party. I've seen more than double that go on
> a single "hot" night"
>
> And, finally, don't panic. It's a con. It'll all work out.
And more
> GLLUG threw a room party last year, and will be this year as well. We
> found that food was not a concern of party goers, as they could get
> all the free food they could handle in the con suite.
>
> They do like beer though, especially if you have something unique. We
> went through a keg of scottish ale last year in two days. We're
> bringing an equivalent quantity in home brewed beer this year, in
> addition to a root beer that I hope will be a hit.
>
> One thing we did last year and will do again this year is bring a hot
> meal for our group for Friday. Last year it was venison chili, and
> this year it's to be macaroni and cheese (and possibly collard greens
> with chick peas). Our group managed the Brazillian Beef, and any
> respectable member is expected to eat that on Saturday.
