Here are my notes:
VMWare Presentation by Ray to MDLug.org 11/10/2007.
Download the RPM or Tar. Unpack and CD to the directory. Run the install, straight forward.
Docs are simple, they just say to run install script. Just google problems or send a note to MDLUG list.
If you update your Kernel then you may have to run through configure - recompile.
Ray said he has never had to change a default configure. Another person said he just did defaults all the way through.
Share a network card. Virtual cards are configurable.
Normal mask is 255.255.255.0.
The larger the number the fewer systems that can be addressed.
The install asks questions for example: where do you want to install this.
You can install other operating systems such as Windows 95.
Why would you want to do this? Perhaps you have a client with a problem and you need a specific software stack.
All the tabs on the GUI are closeable.
Sidebar is handy. Start, stop.
May set up directories in categories (Windows images in a windows directory, Linux in linux).
It does have a non-graphics interface.
VMWare console. Don't need graphics. Install client on PC. Don't need X.
X has to be installed.
May emulate IDE or SCSI. May need to download drivers.
Emulators never work as fast as the real fast.
May name the virtual what you want - then find some directories with spaces in the name.
Scripts can break if they don't use quotes around directory names - general concept.
Select the type of network connections. "Use bridged network" is the first options.
Never used "Use network translation Nat" (helps hide systems).
The option "Host only network" restricts it to only talk to the systems connected to the host.
Select your disk size. 100 MB is smallest. May get as big as you drive.
Allocate all at once for better performance.
Split disks into 2 gig - early fat 32.
Wish they had 4.5 gig - the amount on a DVD.
Gzip may save some space.
Tar will compress only the things that are there - won't take space for empty space.
Will only generate a fake mac address.
Virtual network cards will be sen if you use bridged.
May obtain OS from an ISO file instead of a CD.
CPU time-slices to each of the virtual systems.
Win 98 can't do anything with 256 meg (maybe Photoshop will use it).
Some of the configure items can change while running it. Can't change ram.
When it shuts down you then just click on it.
Will swap if memory allocation is higher then physical. Overbook is okay but can run into issue.
Has a slider for memory. VM reserves some for itself.
Has recommended min, suggested, max.
In real life you don't want to over-commit. Leave some spare.
BIOS splash - must click into window when booting - only have 3 seconds.
CNTL alt - takes focus away. CNTL - R - reboot.
Command line: vmware stop <path>.
When you install host it also install player.
Garbage left from a crash can be deleted.
After you set it up then you close. Then you open and install the OS.
Don't edit the files while VM is open (not only running - but just open).
License issues may exist. Phoenix BIOS is included in VMWare.
Guest OS WIN sound drivers sound blaster - may need to download.
Two different boot option quick or the one that counts the memory. Use boot time diagnostic - gives you more time.
Karl had set up a VM installed the OS and set up a web site in 7 minutes.
Boot from CD, format C drive (format with /s so hard-drive is bootable: FORMAT C: /S).
Copy CAB files to C drive (copy *.* c:). Then windows will know that OS files are already on the harddrive. Faster install.
Boot into the OS. For Win will require key.
Looks like a normal install.
Click out to Vm (outside of guest OS). Install VM tool tools. Go back into guest OS - set up better video driver.
Browse for divers in the VM tools directory.
Restart guest OS.
A lot of the classic games will play well. Atari won't work well - hardware dependency perhaps.
Will have vmware tools in windows task bar.
Guest OS will show network cards that were set up. Shutdown gracefully. See the network cards that were set up.
May add another virtual network card.
Host only type of network interface will only see systems connected to host.
Guest OS will detect new hardware.
May change video configuration.
Some configuration can loose scroll bars.

Being screwed over at work and have to be on call this weekend so not
able to get there today. 5 weeks and counting until out of there.
Anyone know of Unix openings with companies that treat IT as a
business partner not a liability?

Could someone write good notes.

Thanks

Pat
