Meeting 2/10/2007 Gaudior Academy, Inkster Michigan 12:30 PM.

Informal meeting.  Several unrelated discussions some overlapping.

Problems and topics that came up:

Use Konquer to use fish (a web based method to edit file on a server.

Utic Southfield Radio Club meets regularly. They have Radio Frequency scanners they can check an area for radio use.

The following command will show the version of Linux:
cat /etc/issue

The following commands are helpful for disk space use review:
df -Th
dv -sh * .

We had a short time where members showed magic tricks when the movie "The Illusionist" was mentioned.

KDE is the most used, preferred by more than any other - per Mat.

Mat said he get 3Mbs for his high speed connection fromm AT$T.

Dr. Bob told us about a Comcast experience he had - they dropped the highspeed access to 2 kps (yes kps not Mbs). The building he lived in had an exclusive contract.

Music, audio  software: Amarok is viral (takes control) while XMMS is good.

The following command can be used to help see hard drive (ATA) reliability:
smartctl a /dev/hda

The following command can be used to set operating parms of the hard drive:
hdparm /dev/hdb

A 7 button mouse was configured in Linux.

Note: Gaudior Academy will have a annual auction April 3rd - volunteers welcome.

A disscussion about how to kill a process resulted in a recommendation:
sigup to clean up self, sigkill -9 is an operatiing system kill without asking -should try other methods first.  To see information about the topic try:
man signal 7
kill -1 default

Another useful command: "whatis" can be used to learn what a command does.
Also the command: "apropos" searchs manual name pages and descriptions.

The command "pwd -P" provides physical version of pwd (will show actual).

Due to a scheduling conflict the March 2007 meeting of MDLUG will be
held on the third, rather than the second, Saturday: March 17.

We are still looking for a presenter, if anyone wants to volunteer
please let us know.
