Minutes of the meeting of MDLUG on Saturday, 14 April 2007 ----------------------------------------------------------- Please note: this write-up was typed in several weeks after the meeting. So much of the detail, at this point, was a bit vague. Meeting started 12:42 pm. We begain with a simple idea. Someone (perhaps it was Mary) asked which distro we should use when we are going to show someone Linux. 1. SuSE 2. Ubuntu It was mentioned that Penguicon (Penguicon.org) comes up next week. Other conventions were mentioned: Confusion and Contraption. Bob was distributing copies of MEPIS 6.5 for $2 each. Carl indicated something about Novel trying to market itselve as a superset of Linux. We had two new members attend: Nathen Balin and Stanley. Stanley said he is new to the state - he's from Georgia. Several members suggesed that the job market right now is a bit tough locally. Carl showed a couple videos. They were of two guys identifieng themsleves as PC and Mac. A good looking woman came in and introduced herselve as Linux. Linksys wireless access point used to be all things (had many services . . .) now each is a seperate device. SSH problem - a member indicated he had a problem he need some help with. As always several people in the group were quick to ask questions and offer suggestions. It seems, somehow, a flood of packets was occuring. The discussion became detailed and technical. Mention was made of Sequine Tools and Debian. The Wireshark tool was suggested as a way to see traffic on the network: "Wireshark to watch traffic to see if a scan is hitting the firewall". Carl mentioned Brainshare, Novel Share. GPL3 was mentioned. Zen(virtual) Novel directory service Active Directory can be emulated. Novel SLES 10 desktop was mentioned. Etherreal - protocol analyzer -> wireshark . See Wireshark university to learn. SGI Enlightnment - shown in the movie Gerasic Park. 32 bit/64 bit library. libc 32 bit counter roll over problem AIX GCC. Compile directive SuSE - YAST Demo package Management. Mouse config, Disk DMA change. Best part - install nad remove software easy. Like apt-get Debian based. SuSE Yast - Network services can be changed RPM - package Mouse setting changed- demo. Etherape - shows network OpenDNS useful site - provides domain name service resolution. Load Debian, install. Genome - may change. Task = standard, kde - desktop New Debian installer apt-get install etherape wireshark - see package Swap should be placed at the begining of the disk. EXT3 journaling - log. Many small files run out of nodes. Default can specify. Mary - Beryl window manager - visual effects. Metisse (Mandreva). Mary showed a demo.
